Cinebor puts adults who love similar films into small private chats. To do that we need some information about you. This page explains what we collect, why, who can see it, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have. We have tried to write it in plain language.
The short version
- We collect only what the service needs. We never sell your data or show ads.
- Other members of your cast see your display name, one-line take, five films, avatar, age group and (if you shared it) gender. They never see your email, birth year or location.
- Chats are private to your cast but are not end-to-end encrypted. Anything you type, including a phone number or social handle, is visible to everyone in the cast.
- You can download your data and delete your account yourself, in Settings.
1. Who is responsible for your data
Ansh Sheravia, an individual based in Texas, United States, runs Cinebor and decides how your data is used (in law, the “controller” or, in India, the “data fiduciary”). Contact: cinebor.app@gmail.com.
2. What we collect
| Information | What it is | Why we need it |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Email address; a hashed password if you set one (we never see or store the password itself); when you signed up and last signed in. | To create your account and sign you in. |
| Your films and profile | Display name, optional one-line take, and your five favourite films in order. | To match you by taste and to introduce you to your cast. |
| About you | Birth year; gender (optional, “prefer not to say” is fine); the preset avatar you pick. | Birth year confirms you are 18 or older and sets your age group (18-30, 31-45, 46+) for matching. Gender only helps build mixed casts; it never keeps anyone out. The avatar is how you appear. |
| Where you are | The city you pick from our list. We store that city’s central point, not your address, device location or ZIP/PIN code. | To match you with people in the same city. |
| Chat and safety | Messages you send (including any contact details you choose to share), reports, blocks, warnings, mutes, and a one-way fingerprint of the email of a closed account. | To run the chat, keep it safe, and stop closed accounts from returning. |
| Notifications | If you turn them on, the address your browser gives us to reach this device. | To send short, generic notifications. The text never contains what anyone wrote. |
| Usage counts | Simple counts of steps you take (starting sign-up, finishing onboarding, being cast, sending a message, answering the one-week question), without message text. | To learn whether the service works. Stored in our own database, not sent to any analytics company. |
| Invites and consent | Your invite code and who joined with it (a count, never a name); when you confirmed you are 18+ and accepted these documents, and which version. | To run invites and to keep a record of your agreement. |
| Technical data | Your IP address, browser type and request details, which our hosting and database providers record in their logs. | To deliver the service, prevent abuse and fix faults. Controlled by those providers. |
We do not collect your phone number, address, precise location, contacts, photos, government ID, payment details, or information from social networks or data brokers. Film taste can say a lot about a person, so please do not put sensitive details (such as health, religion or political views) in your one-line take or in the chat.
3. How we use it
- Matching. Each week our software compares your five films with those of other people in your city, and groups people who are alike. Age group is a rule (we do not cast the youngest and oldest groups together, and mix neighbouring groups only for people who have waited). Gender is a soft preference for mixed casts. Nobody reviews your match by hand, and no decision with legal effect is made about you. If a cast is not right for you, leave it and ask for a new one.
- To run the chat, send sign-in codes, and send notices about your account.
- To keep people safe: handle reports, enforce the Guidelines, prevent misuse and respond to legal requests.
- To understand and improve the service, using counts and the one-week survey.
We do not sell your personal data, do not share it for advertising, do not build advertising profiles, and do not send your data to any AI service. We will tell you in advance and ask first if that ever changes.
4. Who can see your data
Other members
Only the members of your current cast see your display name, one-line take, five films, avatar, age group (never your birth year) and gender if you shared it. If you post contact details in the chat, everyone in that cast can see and keep them.
Us
Cinebor is run by one person. We can read reported messages and may look at stored data to fix a problem, enforce the Guidelines or answer a request. We do not read chats for fun.
Companies that help us run Cinebor
| Company | What it does for us | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in and realtime chat. Servers in the US (N. Virginia). | Everything you put into Cinebor. |
| Vercel | Hosts the website and app. | Your requests and IP address; page and form data as it passes through. |
| Google (Gmail) | Sends our sign-in and notice emails. | Your email address and the email text, including your sign-in code. |
| GitHub | Runs our scheduled matching and backup jobs; stores encrypted backups for 30 days. | Profile and film data while a job runs; backups are encrypted. |
| The Movie Database (TMDB) | Film search and data. Posters load from its servers. | What you type in the film search; your IP address and browser details when a poster loads. |
| Browser push services (Google, Apple, Mozilla) | Deliver notifications if you turn them on. | Your device’s notification address and the generic notification text. |
The law and safety
We may disclose information if a valid legal process requires it, to protect someone from serious harm, or to protect our rights. If Cinebor is ever passed to someone else, your data would go with it under these same promises, and we would tell you first.
5. Where your data is stored
Our providers store and process data mainly in the United States. If you use Cinebor from India or elsewhere, your data is transferred to and stored in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from yours. By using Cinebor you accept this transfer.
6. How long we keep it
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Account, profile, films, about-you details | While your account exists. Removed when you delete it. |
| Your messages | While your account exists, so your cast can look back. When you delete your account the text is erased and the message stays as “Message deleted”. |
| Reports and moderation records | Kept as long as needed for safety. When a person deletes their account their name is detached from the records. |
| Fingerprint of a closed account’s email | Kept so the same email cannot sign up again. It is a one-way hash, not the address. |
| Usage counts | Kept without your identity after you delete your account. |
| One-week survey answers | Deleted with your account. |
| Notification address | Until you turn notifications off or delete your account, or your device stops accepting them. |
| Backups | A weekly encrypted backup is kept for 30 days. Data you deleted can remain in a backup for up to 30 days, then expires. |
| Rate-limit counters | About an hour. |
| Provider logs (IP address and similar) | Set by each provider; we do not control them. |
7. Your choices and rights
You can do most of this yourself in Settings:
- See and download everything we hold about you.
- Correct your gender, avatar and city, and your birth year until you are in a cast. Other details can be corrected by emailing us.
- Delete your account. This removes your profile, films and cast memberships and erases your message text.
- Pause matching, leave a cast, block people, and turn notifications off.
- Withdraw your agreement by deleting your account.
For anything else, email cinebor.app@gmail.com from the address on your account. We may need to confirm it is you. We aim to answer within 30 days and will tell you if we need up to 45. If you are not happy with our answer, tell us and we will look again. We will not treat you worse for using your rights.
If you live in the United States
Depending on your state (for example Texas, California, Colorado or Virginia), you may have the right to know what we collect, access it, correct it, delete it, take a copy, and appeal our decision. You may also have the right to opt out of the sale of your data, targeted advertising and profiling that has legal effects. We do none of those things, so there is nothing to opt out of. We do not respond to “Do Not Track” signals because we do not track you. You can complain to your state attorney general. An authorised agent may make a request for you with your written permission.
If you are in India
We handle your personal data on the basis of your consent, given when you sign up, and only for the purposes in this policy. Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 you can ask for a summary of the data we hold and who we share it with, ask us to correct or erase it, withdraw your consent at any time, nominate someone to exercise these rights if you die or cannot act, and have your complaint heard. Our contact for questions and complaints is below and on the Contact page. If we do not resolve your complaint you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
8. Security
Data is encrypted in transit and stored with providers that encrypt it at rest. Passwords are stored only as salted hashes by our sign-in provider. Access to each table is limited so that you can read only your own data and the details of the people in your cast. We limit how often sign-in and other actions can be tried. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects you, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Our team can read reported messages, and a person in your cast can copy what you write.
9. Children
Cinebor is only for people 18 and older. We ask for your birth year and do not knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you think someone under 18 is using Cinebor, tell us. We will close the account and delete the data.
10. Cookies and similar storage
We use only what is needed to keep you signed in and remember your settings. No advertising or tracking cookies. Details are on the Cookies page.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and the date at the top. For important changes we will email you or show a notice in the app before they start.
